After lunch we wandered back toward Piazza del Duomo and I suggested that we visit the interior. Although not as highly decorated as some other churches, e.g. Santa Croce, it is fabulous to see Brunelleschi’s dome from the inside. From their Airbnb terrace we had watched visitors who had climbed the Campanile and Duomo (amazing to do in this heat), and inside the church we saw people who had climbed to the dome’s interior balcony.
After our visit it was back to their apartment, and I stayed with the boys while Rebecca and Bill hiked up to Piazzale Michelangelo for an unexpected date night. James finished the Vespa and I took pictures of it on a table on the terrace with the Duomo behind it – too cool. I had the boys take their showers before their parents returned, then read my book while the boys played their Roblox video game. Rebecca and Bill returned, did their evening ablutions and then out to dinner.
The Kees had met a group of Kent State juniors in Amalfi during the kids' month abroad, and Rebecca had bonded with them. They arrived back in Firenze today and we all met for a long, fun dinner at Trattoria Zà Za. I had some amazing carbonara al tartufo (carbonara with truffles) after a large antipasto for the table, and then several desserts to sample at the end. The girls wanted to take Rebecca to their favorite cannoli place at the Duomo, but I was tired (another hot day) and headed home.
I’m continuing to think about my trip home a week from this-coming Thursday..
