Monday - Day 61

I went to my group conversation class today for the last time – decided as I was walking to school. The lynchpin was that our group was combined with a larger group, and all were advancing in grammar to areas that I do not know, and did not want to spend the time to learn. When my teacher Nadia saw me this morning she was very happy to see me, gushed, and gave me a big hug. I had said last week before going to Milan that might be my last time, but I felt the need to really close it out. There was only one person left from my good classroom group, and I said goodbye to her also.

I had mentioned to Simone, the owner, on my way in that it was my last day. He said, no, it may be your last day here, but it is not your last day - I told him he's obviously used that line before! Nadia also said we have to remain in touch, I have her email, and later on I found her on Facebook and we’re now friends there. I got a couple of things at the supermarket and went home to make a sandwich for lunch, then went to Casa Buonarroti (museum) afterwards. This was Michelangelo Buonarroti’s home for a short time before he moved to Rome, but his family was there for hundreds of years following, but not a very interesting place.

Afterwards I had a request from Rebecca to find a luggage repair store to replace the melted roller wheel on her suitcase. She thinks it was up against a hot smokestack on one of the Amalfi ferries. I went to one she sent me, but they don’t do wheels. They suggested another place, but they don’t do it either. I suggested that she buy a cheap replacement in Firenze, throw out the broken one, and replace it when home – although I don’t think she’ll do that.

I went back to the apartment to get ready for dinner, and went to a place called Caesar on Piazza Beccaria, close to my place. I had been there once for an InterNations cocktail party, and tonight I had one of my best meals in Italy. When I sat down a glass of prosecco appeared almost instantly. I ordered their raviolo, which was about 5” long, filled with pecorino cheese, topped with a light cream sauce and garnished with dried truffle and pear slices. The bread for the table was totally different than any other restaurant I’ve been in – almost a thin, thin pizza with some cheese and oil. All accompanied by a lovely glass of chianti, and all less than €30.
