Today was a slow day – no school owing to the holiday, then going to the pharmacy, lunch at N&M’s, then home. I made a simple dinner after Nan’s wonderful pasta lunch.
2 June is Festa della Repubblica and it is Italian National and Republic Day, with the main celebration taking place in Rome. The day commemorates a vote held in in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. The choices were a representative government or continuing with the monarachy – republic won. The ceremony includes the President laying a laurel wreath as a tribute to the Italian Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria and there is a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome.
