Around 6am I managed to get the heater working again because the electricity was back on. Got out of bed at 8am and put the heater in the bathroom to warm that room enough to take a shower. Got upstairs for breakfast and learned that the heater in Pam’s room kept shorting out and causing the problem. Hopefully all will be working well tonight, and the plan today is to go to the Adriatic coast for dinner after having lunch at home. Gian Luigi is driving up today, should be here soon. I seem to have a mild cold with runny nose and some coughing, but will survive.
I mentioned that the shower was very small for the size of room, and Pam asked me to do a quick sketch to show how it could be made larger, so my work for today is done. I showed it Gian Luigi who said there is a master plan involved. The thinking is to make the adjacent rooms flanking mine into additional bedrooms, and each would have a door into the shared bathroom, hence the size – I don’t think it to be a particularly good plan.
Their property in the Marche is 70 hectares, or 173 acres. They do not grow grapes here, but have various crops including peas and wheat. Their daughter, Diana Lenzi, is the president of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA) and has been managing the family winery, Fattoria di Petroio in Castelnuovo Berardena in Siena. She spends a bunch of time in Brussels and other travels around Europe in her role.
For dinner we went to the Adriatic Coast to a town called Porto Recanati. This beach area is quite different than Italia’s west coast around Tonfano. The beach here has much less area than that at Tonfano and the beach clubs, bagnos, are also smaller. We took a walk along the beach path with restaurants and beach club so the water side, and vacation apartments on the inland side. Got back in the car and drove 5km to their favorite restaurant, Ristorante Dario 1969 at Via Scossicci, 9 – 62017 Porto Recanti (www.ristorante Dario.com) which has a Michelin “Good Level” review. The food was extraordinary with a fish antipasti that went on forever with various separate dishes, including anchovies, escargot, fish soup with fish meatballs, clams, etc. – all caught locally - and dinner was on me. I shared a main course of fish risotto with Gian Luigi, 2 lovely bottles of white wine, and a delightful dolci, then back to the house.
I had left the space heater working all day and it was 68 degrees when I got back to the room and I was totally comfortable in bed.
