Bill had booked a tour an 11am of the catacombs (ancient tombs) outside the city center (I had been there in 2015) and it was marvelous going underground and getting cool – and seeing the extraordinary spaces again. After our tour, Bill looked online and found a place not too far away for lunch – it was really good pasta. My tagliatelle con funghi porcini (porcini mushrooms) was so much better than the pasta at the ristorante last night which seemed hardly cooked. During lunch Bill and I talked about the bakery we had seen up the block which somehow had escaped Rebecca’s attention – so that was the plan for sweets.
This bakery was something. Beautifully designed space, pastries that had great design input, including a Jackson Pollock cake and a Mondrian cake. Back to the apartment where we hung out until I left at 3:30 (not taking any chances) for my 5pm train back to Firenze – which was simple, on time, and I was back in Firenze at 6:30. Since I had a big lunch in Roma so I bought some stuff to make dinner while walking home from the train station.
